چکیده
This review discusses the molecular ion and its deuterated isotopomers. The ion is important because of its fundamental nature, astrophysical significance and dynamical richness. The following topics are discussed: the discovery of H l , its unusual bonding and the important role played by ab initio electronic-structure calculations; the formation of H: and its importance in models of the interstellar medium; the unusual spectroscopy of H: and the accurate quantum calculations which led to laboratory observations; the failure to detect H: in the interstellar medium and its accidental observation in Jupiter; work on H: in the giant planets and other astronomical emission spectra: the very unusual infrared photodissociation spectrum of H: ; and the classical and quantal behaviour of the molecule at its dissociation limit. This review was received in December 1994. 0034-4885/95/040421+56$59.50

There are several observational evidences for the existence of dark matter in the universe. More than about 90% of the matter in the universe is in a form which is not directly observable. If the dark matter is in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) or cosmions, part of it is captured by the Sun, other stars, and even planets. In this paper, some basic ideas of the cosmio...
متن کاملFOLDING OF THE INTERACTION OF HISTONE HI WITH SODIUM N-DODECYL SULPHATE
The effects of sodium n-dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the structure of histone HI has been studied by a combination of e:quilibrium dialysis, U.V. spectroscopy ; polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, protein titration and viscometery techniques using, 2.5 mM phosphate buffer, pH 6.4. The interaction of H, and SDS in contrast tomanyothel-protein-SDS interactions is organized between V 40 to 70. A...
متن کاملInfrared - Your guide to Infrared and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy
Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution, and destiny of life in the universe. The field uses many scientific disciplines and spectrometric technologies to address these important issues. While questions about life in the universe have existed as long as man has looked up at the stars, advances in science and spectrometry in the past few decades make it possible for us t...
متن کاملAn Estimate of the Age Distribution of Terrestrial Planets in the Universe:Quantifying Metallicity as a Selection Effect
Planets like the Earth cannot form unless elements heavier than helium are available. These heavy elements, or ‘metals’, were not produced in the big bang. They result from fusion inside stars and have been gradually building up over the lifetime of the Universe. Recent observations indicate that the presence of giant extrasolar planets at small distances from their host stars, is strongly corr...
متن کاملOn the history and future of cosmic planet formation
We combine constraints on galaxy formation histories with planet formation models, yielding the Earth-like and giant planet formation histories of the Milky Way and the Universe as a whole. In the Hubble volume (1013 Mpc3), we expect there to be ∼1020 Earth-like and ∼1020 giant planets; our own galaxy is expected to host ∼109 and ∼1010 Earth-like and giant planets, respectively. Proposed metall...
